Hello and welcome to This Week in the IndieWeb, audio edition, for the week of May 13th - 19th, 2023. https://indieweb.org/this-week/2023-05-19.html This Week in the IndieWeb is a weekly digest of activities in the IndieWeb community at indieweb.org. It contains recent and upcoming events, posts from IndieNews, and a summary of website updates. This Week in the IndieWeb is sent out Fridays at 2pm Pacific time, with this audio edition appearing over the weekend. You can find the web edition of This Week in the IndieWeb, including all links and an archive of all past editions at indieweb.org/this-week --- # Events Homebrew Website Club is a bi-weekly meetup of people passionate about or interested in creating, improving, building, and designing their own website. Homebrew Website Club met on May 17th with a virtual meetup at 7pm for Europe and London time. Discussion topics included Bluesky updates, algorithms for social media recommendations, compatibility issues between implementations of the English language, and more. You can find photos and links to notes from the meetup in the newsletter. Join us again on May 24th for the next Homebrew Website Club, with virtual meetup scheduled at 7pm for Europe and London time and 6pm for US/Pacific. And, if you're listening to this on May 20th, you might have time to join today's Galactic Bonus Homebrew Website Club! You can always find info about the next upcoming Homebrew Website Club meetups and other IndieWeb events at events.indieweb.org. If you're an organizer, please remember to update the site with information about your venue, times, and how to RSVP. All IndieWeb events follow the IndieWeb Code of Conduct, which can be found at indieweb.org/coc. And, all IndieWeb events are volunteer-run, so if you are interested in helping organize, getting the word out, finding sponsors, and more let us know in the chat at chat.indieweb.org. Planning is underway for an IndieWebCamp Nuremburg for 2023. Tentatively scheduled for October 28th and 29th, it will be adjacent to the border:none conference, which is celebrating its 10 year anniversary. --- Here is a brief summary of posts collected this week by IndieNews, a community-curated list of articles relevant to the IndieWeb. You can read more, or submit posts of your own, at news.indieweb.org. foreverlikethis at foreverliketh.is shared "Exploring the Personal Web". In it the author gives advice on making connections, a topic they consider to be an essential piece of making a personal website fulfilling. In addition to resources on webrings, the post contains a great list of collectives and projects where you can share posts and meet others, including sites like IndieNews. --- And now, a selection of this week's updates from indieweb.org. # New Community Members If you haven't already, now is a good time to create your own user page. It's a great way to introduce yourself to the IndieWeb community, and to collect the things that you are working on, or want to work on, for your personal website. For more details, visit indieweb.org/wikifying. # Community and Concepts No one editing tool or formatting language can meet the unique authoring needs of every person. On the other hand, it may be unreasonable to expect publishing systems to support every author's favored markup syntax. In other news, there certainly were some opinions shared in the chat this week regarding bbcode, restructured text, mediawiki, markdown, and more. # Services and Organizations Wikipedia has introduced a feature to help wiki authors create verification links between their user page and their accounts on other sites. Announced as a way to support verification on Mastodon, the underlying technology originated as an IndieWeb building block known as rel-me. The code has been released as a MediaWiki plugin called "RealMe", and will likely be added to the IndieWeb wiki soon. # IndieWeb Development mf2.link, announced in the newsletter only a couple of weeks ago, is back. The tool, which creates embeddable microformats2-enriched HTML from sites without it, now supports embedding of Mastodon notes, photos, and polls. As always, you can follow the links in the newsletter to learn more about and add detail to any of these concepts. --- That's going to do it for this week. Thank you for listening!
