This Week in the IndieWeb is sent out Fridays at 2pm Pacific time, with this audio edition appearing over the weekend. Homebrew Website Club met on February 15th with virtual meetups at 7pm for Europe/London time and 6pm for US/Pacific time. All IndieWeb events follow the IndieWeb Code of Conduct, which can be found at indieweb.org/coc. And, all IndieWeb events are volunteer-run, so if you are interested in helping organize, getting the word out, finding sponsors, and more let us know in the chat at chat.indieweb.org. --- # Podcasts Episode 425 of the Rocket podcast discusses their Word of the Day: Engagement. In it, hosts Christina, Brianna, and Simone discuss Twitter's pivot to promoting it's CEO's content as well as recent coverage and their own experiences with Mastodon and the ActivityPub-powered Fediverse. --- Here is a brief summary of posts collected this week by IndieNews, a community-curated list of articles relevant to the IndieWeb. You can read more, or submit posts of your own, at news.indieweb.org. Dries at dri.es posted "Nostr, love at first sight". In it, he describes the Nostr protocol and his experiences using it so far, contrasted with his experience so far with ActivityPub. Chuck at cagrimmett.com posted "iOS Shortcut Actions for Micropub posting". The post includes video demonstrations and links to install Shortcuts for posting notes, likes, replies, bookmarks, and more. James at jamesg.blog published two announcements. First up, his recommendation aggregator breakfastand.coffee now supports syndicating recipes. He also posted about history and features of his new avatar fetching service, avtr.dev. --- And now, a selection of this week's updates from indieweb.org. # New Community Members Xie joins us from xieyanbo.me. He is a software developer, building a new personal site on Jekyll. Kwa joins us from kwaa.dev. Their IndieWeb-related projects include Urara, an IndieWeb-compatible blog starter built on SvelteKit, and Seia, a web component for rendering Webmentions in the browser. If you haven't already, now is a good time to create your own user page. It's a great way to introduce yourself to the IndieWeb community, and to collect the things that you are working on, or want to work on, for your personal website. For more details, visit indieweb.org/wikifying. # Community and Concepts Getting a personal domain is a major step in owning your online identity. However, it can be confusing to navigate the process of choosing, registering, and configuring your site in the Domain Name System. This makes DNS an often-cited barrier to entry for personal sites. Simplifying these processes could be a great way to boost IndieWeb adoption. # Services and Organizations As Mastodon grows in popularity, so too does its "verification" feature to indicate that a particular account represents a specific individual or organization. The verification system is built on a common IndieWeb building block named /rel-me, and support for it is growing across the web as organizations like GitHub and The Washington Post are adding the feature to authors' profiles. # IndieWeb Development Rolling your own implementation for IndieWeb building blocks isn't always easy. One thing that can help is great examples and great documentation. This week, the folks at resources.co released indieauth-client, a framework-agnostic server-side Javascript library that includes extensive documentation. As always, you can follow the links in the newsletter to learn more about and add detail to any of these concepts. --- That's going to do it for this week. Thank you for listening!
